First Light Theatre Brings Greek Tragedy to the Stage
Avni Nahar, a South Burlington High School sophomore, is very clear on why she invested time to write an original adaptation of Sophocles’ play Antigone: “Antigone is really close to my heart,” she explained. “It has some important issues that we can connect to the world today.”
Ms. Nahar’s adaptation of a play originally written in 442 B.C. will be performed by a group of exceptional middle school actors from the First Light Theatre Project on January 14-15, 2011.
The Antigone Project, which also involves the assistance of high school students in directing and producing the play, believes that both quality youth theatre and Greek tragedy have relevance in today’s world. These ideas reflect the mission of the First Light Theatre Project, which strives to support an environment of collaboration and communication between young artists and their local communities. The actors and crew members in Antigone, all students fromFrederickH.TuttleMiddle School, will bring to life Sophocles’ classic and demonstrate the power of Greek drama.
All performances will be held at South Burlington High School.
